Devon Introduction
29/07/09 20:05
Hello, and welcome to the Devon Pilot blog.
My name is Rod Landman. I have worked with people with learning disabilities ever since I left school (a long time ago - don’t ask!).
I have worked in Kent, Birmingham, Worcestershire and moved to Devon in 1994. I have worked in residential care and in day services. I have worked for the National Autistic Society, Social Services and the Health Authority. Since 1997 I have worked for ARC on lots of different projects.
We chose North Devon as one of the pilot sites because it’s where we first started hearing stories about people with learning disabilities being abused and exploited by some of their ‘friends’.
During the last 2 weeks I have been meeting lots of people, and trying to get people involved in the first meeting of the North Devon pilot.
People from the following organisations will be coming:
Devon & Cornwall Police,
The Community Safety Partnership,
The ‘Safety Pack’ project,
The Safeguarding Adults Board,
The Hate & Prejudice Crime Prevention Group.
We will also have a service provider and a family carer.
The aim is that people with learning disabilities make up half of the pilot group.
Today I met with people with learning disabilities from the Tarka Hub and North Devon People First in Barnstaple. They were very interested in the project, asked lots of good questions, and had some good suggestions.
I have also sent a poster about the project around many of the services in North Devon. In early September I’ll be meeting people from the Breakaway Club.
I’m off on my holidays at the end of this week - a wet and windy Scotland here I come! - so more on my return.
