For all with services in North Devon

By now, you may have heard me mention the new 'Safety Net' project. This is to do with people with learning disabilities being abused and exploited by people who have 'befriended' them in the community.

This national project has two pilot sites, one of which is North Devon. I am currently setting up the local steering group.

I have recruited representatives from the Police, Community Safety Partnership, the 'Keeping Safe' project, the Hate & Prejudice Crime Prevention Group, Safeguarding Adults, a family carer and a service provider (Bill Allen, CPND).

I am now looking to recruit about 6 people with learning disabilities. The group will meet in Barnstaple about once a month over the next 3 years, and determine the direction and priorities of the project. The first meeting is at the Castle Centre on September 22.

I am less interested in people being 'representatives' as I am in them having personal experience of 'Mate Crime' and having something to offer by way of insights and ideas.

Could you help by displaying the attached poster where your service users can see it, and by talking it through with them. I'm happy to meet and chat with anyone who you think has a serious interest.

If more than 6 people come forward, I will have to think about a selection process.

Please let me know if you need any more information.

Thanks for your help,

Rod
